Twenty players took part at the CCTTA club on Denison Street in Markham on Sunday, October 18, 2026, for an afternoon of U2000 singles that was scheduled to start at 1:00 pm. By the end of the day, Kelvin Ephraim (1743) had won the CCTTA Top 8 U2000. He didn't lose a match he actually played. In the semifinals he beat top seed Iraj Golmohammadi (1952) in five games. He then took the final 3-0 against Edward Xin (1347).

Kelvin's title run was only one of the day's stories. Kelvin finished second in his own group, behind a player rated almost 600 points lower. All five group winners reached the quarter-finals, and only one of them made the semis. And Kelvin's quarter-final and semifinal produced ten straight games that all ended 11-9.

Format: Five Groups, a 32-Slot Draw and Sudden Death at 10-10

The U2000 Singles event opened with five round-robin groups of four (A to E), every match played best of five. Nobody went home after the groups: all 20 players advanced into a 32-slot knockout bracket, seeded from their group finishes. That gave 12 players a bye straight into the round of 16, all five group winners and five runners-up among them. The other eight met in four play-in matches.

From the groups through the semifinals, a sudden-death point at 10-10 decided the game. The final and the third-place match went back to standard deuce, where you need a two-point lead.

Group Stage: Five Winners, a Walkover and a Tight Group B

Three of the five groups were won by their highest-rated player. Two group winners, Iraj and Tarun, didn't drop a single game.

  • Iraj Golmohammadi (1952) won Group A 9-0 in games. The closest he came to dropping one was against Emily Xin (1056): 11-3, 11-9, 11-10, with the last game won on the sudden-death point. Emily finished second after 3-0 wins over Wanwei Evan Huang and Lucas Ng.
  • Tarun Tandon (1366) also went 9-0 in games to win Group D, including an 11-7, 11-7, 11-10 win over Herbert Chong (1269).
  • Alvin Sun (1428) won Group C, beating Mykola Shkil (1157) 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6 in the match that decided first place.
  • Ethan Leung (1273) beat Edward Xin (1347) 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6 to win Group E. Edward, the higher-rated player, finished second.
  • Andy Cheng (244) beat Frank Gao (586) 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 11-8 in Group D, the biggest upset of the day by rating (342 points). Andy led 2-0, Frank levelled, and Andy won the decider. Frank was in another five-gamer against Herbert Chong, coming back from 0-2 down before Herbert took the fifth 11-9.

Group B produced the tightest table. Kelvin beat Benson Zhao 11-4, 11-6, 11-7, and he beat Cyril Yau (1150) in five: he led 2-0 (11-5, 11-7), Cyril levelled with 11-10 and 11-9, and Kelvin won the decider 11-6. But Kelvin's match against Sofia Leung went down as a walkover in her favour. Under the event's match points, that left Kelvin on 4 points and Cyril, who beat Benson and Sofia, on 5. Cyril won the group, and Kelvin went into the knockout as B2.

Group winners: A – Iraj Golmohammadi · B – Cyril Yau · C – Alvin Sun · D – Tarun Tandon · E – Ethan Leung. The full tables are on the group standings page.

The Knockout Path: Play-ins, a Rally from 0-2 and Ten Games of 11-9

Three of the four play-ins finished 3-0. The fourth was an upset: Kangiten Balasunder (421) came from a game down to beat Frank Gao (586) 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9. Jaylok Tsang beat Sofia Leung 11-6, 11-3, 11-4, Terry Chen beat Lucas Ng 11-5, 11-10, 11-5, and Andy Cheng won his play-in 3-0.

Kangiten nearly pulled off something much bigger in the round of 16. He took the first two games against Alvin Sun, 11-7, 11-7, against a player rated 1,007 points higher. Alvin answered with 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 to win 3-2. Kelvin dropped his first game to Wanwei Evan Huang 7-11, then won 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. The other six round-of-16 matches finished 3-0. Iraj beat Jaylok Tsang, Ethan Leung beat Herbert Chong, Tarun Tandon beat Terry Chen, Mykola Shkil beat Benson Zhao, Edward Xin beat Emily Xin and Cyril Yau beat Andy Cheng.

That left all five group winners in the last eight. Only one of them got through.

Iraj Golmohammadi vs Ethan Leung. Ethan won the first game 11-9. Iraj won the second on the sudden-death point at 10-10, then pulled away 11-8, 11-7 to win 3-1 (9-11, 11-10, 11-8, 11-7).

Kelvin Ephraim vs Alvin Sun. Every game ended 11-9. Kelvin won the first, third and fifth, and Alvin levelled twice before Kelvin closed it out: 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9).

Mykola Shkil vs Tarun Tandon. Mykola (1157) led 1-0 and 2-1, winning the third game 11-4. Tarun forced a decider by winning the fourth on the sudden-death point. Mykola took the fifth 11-8 to win 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 10-11, 11-8), a 209-point upset that put him in the semifinals.

Edward Xin vs Cyril Yau. Group B winner Cyril took the opener 11-5. Edward won the next three, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7, to win 3-1.

Semifinals and Bronze: Kelvin Stops the Top Seed

Three of the four semifinalists were group runners-up: Kelvin (B2), Mykola (C2) and Edward (E2). Iraj (A1) was the only group winner left.

Kelvin Ephraim d. Iraj Golmohammadi 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9). Once again, every game finished 11-9. Iraj, the highest-rated player in the field at 1952, led 1-0 and then 2-1. Each time, Kelvin answered. He won the fourth game to force a decider, then took the fifth by the same score. Counting the quarter-final, that was ten games in a row decided 11-9. It was also the upset of the knockout stage on paper: Kelvin was rated 209 points below Iraj.

Edward Xin d. Mykola Shkil 3-0 (11-10, 11-8, 11-6). The opening game went to the sudden-death point and Edward won it. Edward then won the next two 11-8, 11-6 to reach the final.

In the third-place match, standard deuce was back. Iraj Golmohammadi beat Mykola Shkil 3-1 (11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7) to finish third. Mykola won the third game 12-10 to extend the match, and Iraj closed it out in the fourth.

The Final, Game by Game: Ephraim vs Xin

Edward came into the final with the fifth-highest rating in the field, 396 points below Kelvin. He had won three straight knockout matches, beating Emily Xin, Group B winner Cyril Yau and Mykola Shkil. Kelvin had just come through two straight five-game matches.

  • Game 1 – Ephraim 11-7. Kelvin took the opener.
  • Game 2 – Ephraim 11-7. The same score, and a 2-0 lead.
  • Game 3 – Ephraim 11-0. Kelvin finished the final without conceding a point in the last game.

Final: Kelvin Ephraim d. Edward Xin 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-0).

Congratulations to Kelvin on the title, and to Edward on his run from second in Group E to the final.
